From Feeling Stuck to Finding Renewed Impact

During a leadership team coaching session, one executive stayed back to chat. He welcomed the confidential space to reflect and asked me what I had observed in his leadership and as a team player.

Before answering, I asked why the question mattered. His response was striking: despite being a highly profiled executive with decades of experience and the deep respect of his colleagues, he felt stuck.

“I don’t feel heard the way I once did. I’m not having the same impact. And if I’m honest, the enthusiasm I used to feel for the work has faded.”

This leader had been with his organisation for many years. His internal credibility was high, and his stakeholders trusted him. Yet, the very strengths that had built his career had become his constraint. He was running on autopilot.

Together, we explored deeper questions:

  • Why are you still in this role beyond the financial benefits?
  • Where are you directing your energy and priorities?
  • What outcomes are those priorities designed to achieve?

Through this reflection, he realised he was over-relying on his operational knowledge of the business, while under-leveraging his leadership voice in shaping external strategy, marketplace dynamics, and the unknown factors shaping future decisions.

What he needed was a reset – a personal SWOT analysis of his leadership. By reassessing how his knowledge, influence, and energy aligned with both the organisation’s direction and the external environment, he began to reconnect with the impact he craved.

The Leadership Lesson

Even the most respected leaders can hit a plateau. What matters is recognising it and creating the space to reset.

At NewlandRock, we see this moment as a tipping point. By stepping back, leaders can:

  • Re-evaluate their lane of leadership (Lever 1)
  • Reconnect with their business impact (Lever 2)
  • Refresh their influence with stakeholders (Lever 3)
  • Align with the evolving culture and strategy (Lever 4)

The result? A renewed sense of clarity, energy, and impact.

Could this be you?

If you’re a senior leader who feels your voice isn’t landing the way it once did, or you sense your impact has stalled, you’re not alone. Many executives reach this point in their journey. The key is knowing how to reset.
